Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay should make a move for free-agent Miguel Veloso after it was confirmed that midfielder Kieran Lee would be out for an extended period of time.
What’s the situation?
According to The Sheffield Star, Wednesday midfielder Lee’s return from a hip injury, that has meant he is yet to play under Luhukay, has been delayed by a new knee injury that will keep him out for several weeks more.
The defensive midfielder was on the cusp of breaking back into the Owls first team squad after his long lay off, but picked up the new injury within the first 15 minutes of an U23’s game against Colchester United on Monday.
Sheffield Wednesday endured a difficult summer as the club were placed under a transfer embargo by the English Football League for failing to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, meaning that Luhukay was unable to sign any players on permanent deals. However, the ban was lifted before the deadline to sign players on loan expired on August 31, meaning that Luhukay was at least able to bring in Michael Hector from Chelsea and Josh Onomah from Spurs on season-long deals.

Midfield cover
With the current injury problems though, Luhukay would be wise to look to a free-agent to provide cover at least until the January transfer window or the end of the season, and Veloso would be an excellent signing.
The 32-year-old is a former Portugal international with 56 caps for his country and so is extremely experienced, but remarkably he is still available on a free transfer after leaving Italian side Genoa in the summer.
Wednesday currently sit 11th in the Championship table but bringing in a defensive midfielder of Veloso’s quality and experience to play alongside Barry Bannan would allow them to kick on towards the playoff places.
