German legend Oliver Bierhoff believes Arsenal have let down Mesut Ozil, following the scathing criticism directed towards the Gunners’ all-time record signing in the wake of the 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich.
Whilst the entire team under-performed in the Champions League Round of 16 first-leg at the Allianz Arena, it was Ozil that faced a vast chunk of the criticism- which Olivier Bierhoff believes is extremely unfair.
Speaking to Sport Bild, and quoted by The Daily Mail, Bierhoff said:
‘If I look at Ozil, who was singled out following the 5-1 loss to Bayern, in that match there was not much support for a player like Mesut, who lives on his footballing qualities. The team let him down a bit.’
Arsenal’s season now hinges on three upcoming matches, with this weekend’s trip to Anfield likely to have a huge impact on the battle for the top-four, before the Gunners then host Bayern Munich in the second-leg.
Finally, Arsenal’s hopes of success this season rest on next weekend’s FA Cup quarter-final clash with non-league Lincoln City at the Emirates Stadium.
