Recent reports from The Independent have revealed Newcastle failed with a £20million bid for Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney after being linked with his services during the January transfer window.
That may seem a steep price for a second-tier player but the one-cap Scotland international was unquestionably one of the most effective players in the Championship last season, finishing up 13 goals and ten assists to his name.
He also averaged the third-most key passes per match, 2.6, of any player in the division, highlighting the creative quality the 26-year-old would offer Newcastle.
The Magpies are preparing for life back in the Premier League with Rafa Benitez seemingly wanting his side to achieve more than simply safety come the end of 2017/18, Cairney could be a wise addition.
But £20million already seems like more than enough for the Cottagers playmaker. So, should Newcastle launch an improved bid for Cairney or focus their transfer attentions elsewhere? Let us know by voting below…
