The top-of-the-table Tasmania could not live up to their reputation and faced following-on as they crashed to 133 and a first-innings deficit of 407 at Sydney. New South Wales, who declared at 5 for 540, were on track for victory in one of the most one-sided Pura Cup games this season.Stuart MacGill cleaned up the Tigers’ lower order with 4 for 26 after Doug Bollinger and Matthew Nicholson tore through the recognised batsmen. Michael Dighton’s 54 was the only bright spot for Tasmania – albeit a tiny one – on the second consecutive day of total New South Wales dominance. Bollinger had both openers back in the pavilion within the first three overs and the 37 that Dighton and Travis Birt added for the third wicket was the best any Tasmania pair could muster.Phil Jaques failed to add to his overnight score and edged Ben Hilfenhaus behind for 192, but Brad Haddin’s unbeaten 84 kept the home side on the front foot. Haddin built a 142-run partnership with Grant Lambert, the allrounder who finished with 52 not out.Tasmania’s fielding continued to let them down. Having dropped Jaques three times on the first day, they also put down Haddin on 8 and Lambert on 0, and missed six chances throughout the innings.
